The word “funk” can be traced back to the Latin "fumigare" (to smoke) which became known to English speakers as “musty.” Today, when we think of the word in musical terms, we think of something that is deeply felt, or just makes you want to get up and move.
Lettuce started out in 1992 as an outlet for several Berklee College of Music students. Initially influenced by various funk and jazz artists from the 60’s and 70’s, they have widened their pallet over the years and since 2002 have recorded and released some wonderful music. “Phyllis” is from their 2015 album Crush. It’s a laid back, bouncy track that touches on psychedelic rock, dub, afrobeat, and hip hop. I think Lettuce is a great group that deserves more attention, and Crush is a melodic adventure worth taking.

Adriano Celentano has been a fixture in modern Italian culture since 1957. Initially influenced by Elvis Presley and Jerry Lewis, he made a name for himself as a singer, actor and TV personality. He would soon move behind the camera, becoming a successful director and producer.
“Una Storia Come Questa” (A Story Like This) is from the soundtrack to the 1971 film Er Più – storia d'amore e di coltello. It’s a unique song that starts off as chanson meets polka, then quickly morphs into a trans-euro symphonic escape. I especially love the ending as his voice fades, either chasing love or the train that got away. With over 150 million albums sold, Adriano Celentano is a powerhouse of Italian music. He is often credited for introducing Rock-n-Roll to Italy and his comedic roles are beloved throughout Europe. I think this is a wonderful song and an artist that should have been more popular in the United States. For those of you that visit this site I’m sure you’ve noticed that I not only showcase music I adore, but music that was forgotten, unnoticed, or was unconventionally influential. Sure, I too enjoy pop songs, but I also seek music that challenges the listener. This song falls into that category.
There is a lot going on with this genre bending track. It’s energetic, slightly haunting, and otherworldly while also winking at the 80’s, punk, and prog rock. Oh, and it has an eerily addictive chorus. Hunter Zach, the mind behind Hear The Taste, might be too foreign for most pallets, but his ideas lean on brilliant, and someday the average listener might catch up to him. |
