When you think of the 80’s and all the catchy wonderful pop music that decade produced, this track could easily be in your top ten.

Released in August of 1987, “Lips Like Sugar” became a breakout single for the Bunnymen on both sides of the Atlantic with its catchy chorus, memorable lyrics, and shimmery guitars. This song, along with the band’s addition to The Lost Boys soundtrack, helped Echo & the Bunnymen expand their audience in the states.

Singer/songwriter Ian McCulloch was never satisfied with it, but it’s become an iconic song and one of my all-time favorites from that time period.

“Nag” by The Halos

With the scorching weather taking over much of the planet, I thought this song would be a fun one for the week.

Originally released in the US in 1961 on 7 Arts Records, “Nag” was a breakout hit for a vocal quartet mostly known for backing many of producer Morty Craft’s artists, as well as Bobby Vinton, Johnny Nash, Little Eva, Johnny Mathis, Dion, the Coasters, Connie Francis, and Ben E. King.

The Halos member and founder Arthur Crier wrote the song as a humorous take on domestic life and his deep voice and distinctive line “you’re a nag” became an infectious and memorable hook.

Every once and a while you just wanna get up and go, whether in a car, on your bike, or just out the door. For me, “4 AM” and all of its versions is one of those songs that perfectly captures such a getaway.

Recorded in 2006 and released two years later as the sixth single from Kaskade’s Love Mysterious album, “4 AM” is a fantastic house track, with excellent lyrics and a wonderful vocal performance by Becky Jean Williams.

“Les Fleur” by Minnie Riperton

Brilliance is sometimes hard to define, let alone appreciate. Such is the case for Minnie Riperton and her debut solo album Come to My Garden. Recorded in November of 1969 and released a year later to little success or attention, it is now considered a timeless classic.

“Les Fleur” is the daring, thoughtful, and uncompromising lead track from the record. Co-written by her former husband Richard Rudolph and arranger Charles Stepney, it not only showcases their talents, but Minnie’s divine and angelic voice.

We lost Minnie Riperton forty three years ago this week, but her brilliance will never be forgotten.
