November takes me back to my time in college, those years bookmarked between increased autonomy and responsibility, when sleepless mornings finishing term papers or tromping through frosted leaves after a party were the norm.
For many, Vampire Weekend’s 2008 self-titled album captures this naivety and youthful frenzy. It’s a fantastic mix of excellent songwriting sprinkled over indie and Afro-pop. I particularly love “Campus” and how you can hear each member of the band working perfectly together. It also showcases Rostam Batmanglij’s underrated ability to write and produce a near timeless classic. Willie Nelson considers his former friend and colleague the best songwriter and funniest person he ever knew. With 11 Grammys, a Tony award and various hall of fame inductions, it’s hard to disagree with him.
Although some may know Roger Miller for his acting, he’s best known for his 1964 hit “King of the Road” and many of his humorous novelty songs such as “Dang Me,” “Chug-a-Lug,” and “You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd.” “Lock, Stock and Teardrops” was recorded and released in 1963 on RCA. It showcases Miller’s rare ability to turn a failing relationship into a humorous ballad. I love this track. His vocal performance is earnest, and just before it becomes too sappy he winks at the listener with a chorus that’s catchy, subtle and hilarious. |
