The word “funk” can be traced back to the Latin "fumigare" (to smoke) which became known to English speakers as “musty.” Today, when we think of the word in musical terms, we think of something that is deeply felt, or just makes you want to get up and move.
Lettuce started out in 1992 as an outlet for several Berklee College of Music students. Initially influenced by various funk and jazz artists from the 60’s and 70’s, they have widened their pallet over the years and since 2002 have recorded and released some wonderful music. “Phyllis” is from their 2015 album Crush. It’s a laid back, bouncy track that touches on psychedelic rock, dub, afrobeat, and hip hop. I think Lettuce is a great group that deserves more attention, and Crush is a melodic adventure worth taking.
